working for peanuts - 적은 돈을 받고 일하다


(Ellen is talking to her teenage son, Brian...)
(엘런이 10대 아들 브라이언과 이야기를 한다...)


Ellen: Did you get the job?
엘런: 일은 구했니?

Brian: Yes, but it doesn't pay very much.
브라이언: 구하긴 했는데 임금이 그리 많지 않아요

Ellen: What do you have to do?
엘런: 뭐를 해야 하는데?

Brian: Well, I have to start as a busboy. You know, cleaning off plates from tables.
브라이언: 그게요, 버스보이부터 시작해야되요. 있잖아요, 식탁에서 접시 치우는거요

Ellen: Nothing wrong with that. That's a very popular restaurant.
엘런: 뭐가 어때서 그래. 거기 장사가 아주 잘 되는 식당이잖니

Brian: But I'll be working for peanuts.
브라이언: 그래도 쥐꼬리만큼 받고 일하게 되잖아요

Ellen: It's a start. You'll be working as a waiter in no time.
엘런: 이제 시작이잖니. 금방 웨이터가 될거야

Brian: I told the manager I wanted to work the night shift.
브라이언: 매니저한테 밤근무 하고 싶다고 얘기했어요

Ellen: And what did he say?
엘런: 그래 매니저가 뭐라고 하든?

Brian: He said that would be okay.
브라이언: 그렇게 할 수 있을 거래요

   "I don't like to work at night, so I work the day shift."
   (난 밤에 일하는 거 싫어서 낮 근무로 일해)
